چکیده

Abstract The dust extinction curves toward individual sight lines in M33 are derived for the first time with a sample of reddened O-type and B-type supergiants obtained from Local Group Galaxies Survey (LGGS). observed photometric data LGGS, PS1 Survey, UKIRT, PHATTER Galaxy Evolution Explorer, Swift/UVOT, XMM-SUSS. Star formation and dust extinction in nearby star forming and starburst galaxies

We study the star formation rate and dust extinction properties of a sample of nearby star forming galaxies as derived from Hα and UV (∼ 2000 Å) observations and we compare them to those of a sample of starburst galaxies. The dust extinction in Hα is estimated from the Balmer decrement and the extinction in UV using the FIR to UV flux ratio or the attenuation law for starburst galaxies of Calze...

Extraplanar Dust and Star Formation in Nearby Edge-On Galaxies

We present high-resolution (∼< 0. 7) ground-based images of the edge-on spiral galaxies NGC 891 (D ∼ 9.5 Mpc) and NGC 4013 (D ∼ 17 Mpc) acquired with the WIYN 3.5-m telescope. These BVI+Hα images reveal complex webs of dusty interstellar material far above the midplanes of both galaxies (0.5 ∼< |z| ∼< 2 kpc) as discussed previously by Howk & Savage (1997). The dusty high-z clouds, visible in ab...

Star formation and selective dust extinction in luminous starburst galaxies

We investigate the star formation and dust extinction properties of very luminous infrared galaxies whose spectra display a strong Hδ line in absorption and a moderate [Oii] emission (e[a] spectrum). This spectral combination has been suggested to be a useful method to identify dusty starburst galaxies at any redshift on the basis of optical data alone. We compare the average e(a) optical spect...

Spatially resolved star formation histories of nearby galaxies: evidence for episodic star formation in discs

Using long-slit spectroscopy from Moran et al. (2012) we constrain the radial dependence of the recent star formation histories of nearby galaxies with stellar masses greater than 1010M⊙. By fitting stellar population models to the combination of SSFR, D4000 and HγA, we show that the star formation histories of many disk galaxies cannot be accurately represented if their star formation rates de...

Spatially Resolved Chemistry in Nearby Galaxies I

We have imaged emission from the millimeter lines of eight molecules—C2H, C 34S, N2H +, CH3OH, HNCO, HNC, HC3N, and SO—in the central half kiloparsec of the nearby spiral galaxy IC 342. The 5 (∼ 50 pc) resolution images were made with the Owens Valley Millimeter Array (OVRO). Using these and previously published CO and HCN images we obtain a picture of the chemistry within the nuclear region on...
